In Greek society, the hetaerae formed a separate group of women from the mothers of Athenian citizens. They were of foreign origin and their occupation and formation were not part of traditional feminine canons in Athens. These courtesans participated in a cultural life and knowledge generally forbidden to respectable women whose task was to take care of the home and engender citizens for the polis. Pericles himself recognized them as leaders and with a possible political role that allowed them to share power in the Greek polis.
